SPEECH & LANGUAGE
Communication is the act of giving, receiving, and sharing information. When there is a breakdown in the production of speech or the formulation of language (expressive and/or receptive skills), then communication is impaired. Communication deficits can be expressive and/or receptive and both verbal and/or nonverbal (i.e., expression/gesture, written).
SWALLOWING (DYSPHAGIA)
Dysphagia means difficulty swallowing, which can mean taking more time and effort to move food or liquid from your mouth to your stomach possibly resulting in food/liquid going into the airway or a reduction in oral consumption. Dysphagia can occur at any age, but it's more common in older adults.
COGNITION
The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) defines cognitive communication disorders as difficulty with any aspect of communication that is affected by disruption of cognition. Examples of cognitive processes include: attention, memory, organization, problem solving/reasoning, and executive functions. Problems in these areas can affect verbal and nonverbal communication in activities of daily living, and academic and work performance.
VOICE
“The human voice is the most perfect instrument of all” – Arvo Pärt.
A voice disorder occurs when voice quality, pitch, and loudness differ or are inappropriate for an individual's age, gender, cultural background, or geographic location. We know everyone has something important to say! Let us help you say it loud and clear!
